Assignment
The University of Phoenix Police
Department has been dealing with the population increasing tremendously over
time. With the population growing and students coming to school prospering for
that locked-in tuition rate the department has discovered a hike in crimes
being committed especially the ones needing to be criminally investigated.
Crimes are varying between criminal damage, to sexual misconduct and rape. For
justice to be served there needs to be scientific evidence presented to the
courts proving that the defendant is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The
University of Phoenix Police Department is seeking a $50,000 grant for the
purpose of improving the processing and examination of DNA evidence collected
pursuant to criminal investigations. There are many DNA samples awaiting
processing, and any funding received is meant to help and will go directly into
improving the process. The grant funding of 50,000 will be for a period of one
year.
Referring to the grant budget
sheet. $17,358.00 will go directly towards equipment costs, such as DNA
analyzers, microscopes, freezers, and even printers. $23, 300.00 will go toward
consumables for the lab, such as razor blades and office supplies. The
remaining $9,341,28 will go towards the part-time staff cost. At this point in
time, there can be no full-time employees, because it is not in the
department’s budget to be able to pay full-time benefits. However, there is
hope that once everything starts running smoothly that the department plans to
expand the DNA lab in hopes to help other departments and communities with
forensic and DNA testing. Once this happens the department plans to have full-time techs on duty, with full-time benefits.
